Matthew Hopkins
Matthew Hopkins, a most feared man in the 16th century, better known as the ‘witch-finder general.’ His reign of terror led him to prosecute over 230 alleged witches. There were many witch-finders in the era of witch-craze, but Hopkins was the most famous.
His job was to trail all over England attempting and succeeding in finding ‘witches,’ if a person was suspected of witchcraft; he was the one that confirmed a suspicion that couldn’t be disproved. There were many reasons why Hopkins accused people of witchcraft but the most obvious reason would be due to the hefty sum of money behind his accusations. People would pay a lot of money to hear what they wished to listen to. Although those were not the exact words he used to preach. He claimed he had been given a gift from God; God had summoned him to rid the world of these evil creatures. I do not what story you wish to believe, but I am slightly leaning to the first.
The ironic end of Matthew Hopkins, was that at the end he himself was accused of witchcraft, due to his extent knowledge of witches. He was 'floated' and obviously drowned, well they do say what goes around, comes around. Perhaps Matthew Hopkins deserves ironic end.
